Vintage Photo Paintings
For about a decade (from 2004-2014) I was fascinated by vintage photos. A wonderful series of sepia photos of my husband’s grandmother and her sisters wearing long dresses and engaged in informal activities captivated me. The photos dated from 1910 and were unusual in their informality.
My first paintings kept the sepia tones, but gradually, as I sought out other subjects, I began adding color. For a time I was associated with several galleries in the Cape May, NJ area so found old photos of Atlantic coast beach scenes from the Library of Congress as well as local historical societies. There was no lack of subject matter! I also painted a number of commissions in this genre – everyone has old photo albums with treasured photos of ancestors!
As with many artistic fascinations, however, it gradually lost its fascination as I moved on to other sources of visual stimulation. But who knows? Perhaps one day it will again appeal to me.
A few paintings remain from that period and are available. They are oil on panel and edge-painted. No framing required.
