About Me

I am an oil painter based in Virginia. In the not-too-distant past, I focused on trains and plein air painting, but recently I find myself fascinated with old, dilapidated buildings and vehicles of the Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia. These paintings take a little more time so I find myself spending more time in the studio.

Even more recently, I’ve ventured into work that is quite a departure for me — painting more abstract, imaginative images. The old buildings and rusty vehicles fascinate me for the same reason that trains do. They all have a geometric quality and/or rusty, peeling, multi-layered surfaces. In the Abstracts, I find I am creating my own multi-layered surfaces and geometrics, but without reference to actual, real objects in front of me.

In the more distance past, I created many paintings based on vintage photos. I am no longer doing this, except possibly for commissions, but a few works remain available.

I am also no longer creating photos of the multi-layered surfaces of trains, but again, some remain available.

Historically, painting is a fourth career, after high school teaching, television journalism, and law practice. I had always loved art and while practicing law, I began taking drawing classes at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. That love became a passion and I eventually left law for art. Even before retiring from law practice, I had become actively involved with Artspace gallery in Richmond, serving as President for two years, and then chairman of the Exhibitions Committee.  I am still involved as an on-leave member, although I no longer live in Richmond.
