Judith Anderson

I have been a high school English teacher, a television journalist (even a news anchor, for a short period of time), and an attorney. My first love, however, has always been art, and in 2001 I retired from law practice to devote more time to painting.

My education as a painter has been haphazard, although I have taken numerous courses at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Hand Workshop (now the Visual Arts Center) in Richmond, Virginia, as well as spent numerous lovely summer weeks at Nimrod Hall Art Camp in Bath County, Virginia. I am primarily self-taught.

In Richmond, I was an active member of Artspace, an artist-run gallery, from 1992 until 2006, having served as president for two years, then head of the Exhibition Committee. I am currently a supporting, but non-active, member.

My paintings have followed two strains: those painted “plein air” (on site, from life) and studio paintings focused primarily on trains. Although the train paintings began with plein air works, I became fascinated with the abstract qualities of train cars, their complex surfaces, their geometry, etc., all of which took more working time in the studio to develop. The fascination has continued to evolve. For a period of time, I was very taken with vintage photographs, and they inspired a number of works, eventually including some involving trains and trolleys. In recent years, many plein air works have been painted in Oaxaca, Mexico, where we spend much of January and February, escaping the worst of winter in the States.
