Judith Anderson

Judith Anderson has been a high school English teacher, a television journalist (even a news anchor, for a short period of time), and an attorney. Her first love, however, has always been art, and in 2001 she retired from law practice to devote more time to painting.

Anderson is almost entirely self-taught (her formal education was academic, not art-oriented), although she has taken numerous courses at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Hand Workshop (now the Visual Arts Center) in Richmond, Virginia, as well as spent numerous lovely summer weeks at Nimrod Hall Art Camp in Bath County, Virginia.

In Richmond, she was an active member of Artspace, an artist-run gallery, from 1992 until 2006. She was one of the key persons behind its controversial, pioneering move to its present location in Plant Zero, in Richmond’s newly designated "Arts District in Manchester," an historic downtown area. She was president of Artspace for two years and more recently served as chair of the Exhibition Committee, spearheading the very successful 2005 radius250 show. She is currently a supporting, but non-active, member.

In recent years her oil paintings have followed two strains: those painted on site from life and those based on old photographs. A solo show at Artspace (September 2004) entitled "Album Series" focused on the latter. She has been represented, from time to time here in Richmond, by Astra Design, and is currently represented by the Avery & Powers Gallery in Avalon, New Jersey.
